Phenomenological and molecular theories of mechanical behaviour of polymer fluids in elongational flow have been reviewed. The applicability of various macroscopic mechanical models for dilute and concentrated polymer systems has been discussed. Some experimental techniques used for the investigation of elongational flow and available data concerning elongational viscosity of polymer melts and solutions have been described.
