Application of finite element method in the milling process stability diagnosis

Paweł Dunaj, Krzysztof Marchelek, Marcin Chodźko
The article presents results both experimental and FEM model-based investigations on chatter phenomena, that occurs in end milling process. On the basis of chatter symptoms observed during machining, the mechanism of its occurrence was identified. Then, FEM model was built to indicate machine tool elements, responsible for stability loss. Afterwards, experimental modal analysis was conducted in order to validate FEM model. Next, FEM model was validated using experimental modal analysis results. Finally, on the basis of validated model, the structural changes were proposed and applied in real object resulting in increased stability.
